The University of Connecticut’s Center for Students with Disabilities announces an opening for a full-time Regional Campus Coordinator for Services for Students with Disabilities (Program Specialist I – UCP VI). Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of the Center for Students with Disabilities at the Storrs Campus in collaboration with the Executive Program Director for Campus Advising and Retention at the Greater Hartford Campus, assists in coordinating services for students with permanent or temporary disabilities to ensure that all University programs, activities and services are accessible. The coordinator assists in ensuring that all University entities are in compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and other relevant state and federal legislation. This position has responsibilities at the Greater Hartford and Storrs campuses. Incumbents are expected to work with a fair amount of independence, but within the goals and objectives established by the supervisor. The successful individual will be sensitive to and have an understanding of the diverse academic, socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of University personnel and students while establishing, maintaining, and fostering a positive working relationship with relative constituents.
In collaboration and consultation with the Center for Students with Disabilities (CSD), responsibilities include:
- Assists in the planning, development, design, implementation and evaluation of services that achieve CSD objectives. Maintain ongoing services, determine program eligibility and provide direct assistance to students by actively supporting student need. Maintain records that document the plan for the provision of selected accommodations. Determine with the students, appropriate academic adjustments consistent with the student's documentation.
- Ensure that academic accommodations are provided to students with disabilities that are consistent with their documentation. These may include: academic advising and personal counseling to enhance student development; residential accommodations; auxiliary aids; registration assistance; access to assistive technology; recruitment of personal assistants, note takers, readers, etc. In addition, monitors the academic progress of students and evaluates the effectiveness of accommodations that are provided and advocates for the instruction in learning strategies. Conducts studies, collects necessary data and evaluates information and prepares analytical reports related to CSD services.
- Serve as a liaison and a resource for students with disabilities to provide consultation with faculty, staff and administrators regarding academic accommodations, compliance with legal responsibilities, as well as instructional, programmatic, physical and curriculum modifications. Provide individualized disability awareness training for campus constituencies. Provide feedback to faculty regarding general assistance available through the office that provides services to students with disabilities.
- Conduct in-service training for other campus staff, faculty and institutional administration to promote understanding and increase awareness of the needs and concerns of students with disabilities. Plans, develops and implements methods and techniques of informing/educating, in coordination with program staff; may develop topics, prepares information designed to communicate information to the students, staff, faculty, the public and others.
- Coordinate correspondence with prospective students and/or their parents by sending specific information regarding services offered and accommodations available for their particular disability; communicate information regarding program activities and services to the campus community; conduct outreach activities for high school students and parents.
- Collect and interpret medical documentation, which must maintain the highest degree of confidentiality, in order to identify appropriate accommodations for individual students.
- Maintain current knowledge of pertinent laws and regulations and their applicability to the University; serve as a resource to the University community in explaining such laws; respond to requests for interpretation of legal mandates on campus-specific issues; serve on campus committees addressing ADA/Section 504; conduct training for campus personnel; interpret court/government agency rulings and interpretations effecting services for students with disabilities; provide information to students regarding their legal rights and responsibilities; process complaints/grievance procedures.
- Act as a liaison and coordinate services for students with disabilities with other campus personnel including faculty, staff, the University community, as well as other students; consult with state, provincial and community resources; consult with other professional peers.
Highlighted Qualifications: MINIMUM: Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with two to four years experience in working with individuals with disabilities in higher education required; comprehensive knowledge, gained through education and/or life experience, of the unique needs of persons with disabilities, including extensive knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, and other relevant state and federal legislation; proven ability to evaluate and produce reliable results, problem-solve and troubleshoot problems; excellent written and communication skills.
PREFERED: Master's degree in rehabilitation, special education, higher education administration or other appropriate field; experience with post-secondary disability service provision; computer literacy, experience and familiarity with the use and applicability of assistive technology for individuals with disabilities; excellent counseling skills.
Salary: Mid $40’s to low $50’s.
