Student Affairs IT Data Analyst (Search #2008337)
(Database Programmer/Analyst, UCP VI)

Under the direction of the Lead Application Developer, the Data Analyst applies technical expertise and specialized knowledge to data management and reporting activities in the Division of Student Affairs.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops a detailed understanding of University databases to insure that the appropriate data are housed in Division databases and that data are properly interpreted.
  2. Provide and automate reports to users, information technology staff, and external units.
  3. Implements data processing interfaces and data transfer systems with other University and external data processing systems.
  4. Works with application developers and system administrators to design and modify the Division data warehouse.
  5. Works with application developers, users, and management to analyze departmental needs for data collection, and designs appropriate systems to meet those needs.
  6. Works with application developers on small scale database backend projects.
  7. Evaluates and recommends the purchase of database reporting software.
  8. Monitors database performance; works with application developers and system administrators to maximize application performance.
  9. Maintains a system of data quality control to assure data integrity and reliability; make recommendations for optimizing database schemas and indexes.
  10. Documents and enforces naming conventions and standards for data definitions and usage and database structures.
  11. Collaborates with information technology staff to create a functional, reliable, and easy to use desktop and network computer environment; works with information technology staff and others to assess the information technology needs of the Division of Student Affairs.
  12. Provides support to the development and testing of Division disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
  13. Maintains an in-depth knowledge of the current practices, trends, and innovations in the field of information technology, particularly related to higher education and student affairs.
  14. Actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University of Connecticut’s diverse student and employee communities, and encourage communication with and among campus constituencies.
  15. Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Five years of technical database analyst experience will substitute for a bachelor’s degree.
  2. At least two years of technical database analyst experience.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to maintaining state-of-the-art technical knowledge.
  4. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Proven ability to present and articulate concepts to both technical and non-technical audience.
  6. Good interpersonal skills including the ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional team in a fast-paced information technology environment.
  7. Ability to work flexible or off-shift hours.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated SQL skills for data import/export, reporting, and database schema management.
  2. Demonstrated experience with and understanding of relational databases.
  3. Demonstrated ability in gathering and refining customer requirements.
  4. Demonstrated ability in attending to detail and quality control.
  5. Demonstrated ability to optimizing queries for best performance.
  6. Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2000 or 2005, SQL Reporting Services, Brio, SPSS, Excel, and Microsoft Access
  7. Exposure to the software development lifecycle.
  8. Skills in programming and software engineering skills.

Starting salary is in the low to mid $50’s and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
